CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Kedric returned with Max and Addy. Max, broadsword in hand, remained by the door, looking formidable. Everything about his demeanor screamed warrior, and fear raced through Myia’s heart. “What’s going on?”

“I found you a blood donor.”

Addy placed a bag on the floor, knelt at her side, and slipped a hand into hers. She smelled of fruit and musk. Her lips appeared red and swollen. The essence of love filled her aura. It couldn’t be more obvious what she and her mate had been doing before Kedric interrupted them. No wonder Max looked like he wanted to murder someone.

“Oh, thank you, Addy. I can’t tell you how much—”

“I’m not the donor.”

“Who is it, then?” Corbin snapped. “I need to hook them up quickly. There isn’t much time.”

Kedric lay down on the empty bedding they’d brought in. He was an arm’s reach from the shaman. “It’s me. Let’s do this.”

Addy shook Kimi awake. “Come with me.” She wrapped an arm around her little sister’s shoulders. “We need to give the men privacy.”

“Myia?”

“Go with Addy. I’ll stay here with Father. Get some sleep.”

After Addy ushered Kimi out of the room, Myia turned her attention to the men. Her heart raced as Corbin inserted a needle—a cannula he’d called it—into Kedric’s arm, like he’d done to her father a moment before. He attached a clear tube to Kedric’s cannula, which ran into a small machine and back out the other side. Corbin turned a switch on the machine, and blood slid through the tube. Once filled with blood, Corbin inserted the other end of the tube into Father’s cannula.

Could this really work? Could inserting the blood of a healthy man into the body of a sick man heal him?

Her heart pounded so hard in the silent room she was sure Corbin could hear it. Heck, Max probably heard it standing guard outside the door.

The process was slow, and the minutes ticked by.

The door opened and Addy entered again. She came to sit by Myia’s side; her hand slipped inside hers and gave a reassuring squeeze. The support and solace were comforting.

Kedric’s eyes closed, and his breathing slowed. He’d fallen asleep.

The rhythm of his breaths was hypnotic. Relaxed, she closed her eyes, inhaled and exhaled in sync with his slow tempo, and prayed to the Spirits.

Okay, pleaded was more like it.

Though there was a balance to life, and death was a natural part of that balance, she prayed for her father to be healed. She needed him. All the people of Pele needed him. He had to live so that he could save the clans.

She couldn’t save them.

Please, let this work.

Corbin turned off the machine and unhooked his patients. “It will be a while before we know if the transfusion is successful.” He wiped sweat from his brow. “But there doesn’t appear to be any complications. I hadn’t expected Lord Kedric to fall asleep, though.”

Addy was quick to respond. “That must be because you did a fine job making him comfortable. Plus, I think he had a busy day today.
